“Play Some Chess” Poster
This poster started as me trying to recreate some awesome typography from the 1993 edition of the Teen Study Bible I found in a thrift store. It quickly spiraled into madness and ramblings on board-games. Keep scrolling to see some production photos.
The Teen Study Bible…
I found a copy of the Extreme Teen Bible in a thrift store years ago and loved the wacky typography they used. I’ve always regretted not buying it, so I went scrounging around the Internet Archive to find a digital copy of it.
Searching for typography…
I don’t know why 90’s Teen Christian typography is so attractive to a Jewish girl who was raised agnostic, but it is. I searched through the whole book and took screenshots of anything that stood out to me. The hardest part was not taking too many screenshots.
Recreating the type…
I brought the type into Adobe Illustrator to trace it and clean it up. After some work with the pen tool, and some additions to the design, I ended up with the final text.
Chess rhymes with stress, right?
Sometimes your brain just shoots out a phrase and you need to roll with it. After that, you just need to finish up the piece.
I’ve always loved the idea of playing chess, but I never really got into it. About three months ago I finally decided to start learning chess and bought some books and really delved into it. Funnily enough, this poster was made almost a year ago—well before I was taking chess seriously. Time really is a flat circle, isn’t it?
