Why Write A Blog?
Because it's fun. Because you've always wanted to do it—so do it.
Think like that old Shia LeBeouf meme and just do it. Do you even remember that meme? Why did he make that? It doesn’t matter right now and I don’t care. That’s the way you should feel when you write something. The why doesn’t matter. The writing is what matters. The act of doing matters.
I believe writers get caught in the trap of thinking too much. I get caught in that trap. I feel like if I think enough, I’ll be able to sit down and have a fully-formed piece spill out of me, but that’s not how it works. Not at all.
Don’t get me wrong: thinking is amazing. And we need to think to write. But we also need to write to write. And you’re never going to get better if you don’t do the thing for real.
I watched so many skateboard videos when I was a teen. I watched tutorial videos on all the tricks. I spent weeks watching videos and learning the physics and whatever other shit I thought would help. And then I got on my board. And I fell off, because I hadn’t had the physical practice of doing it. I hadn’t had the repetition of doing the basic motions over and over again.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that writing is a lot like skateboarding — I spend too much time thinking about doing it and I never get on the board (key- or skate-) and just do it.
Make your dreams come true, and just do it.
